Asko is determined to leave and so requests the wardens’ aid. Quade petitions the witch for Asko's safe passage and she agrees, but at a cost: Asko's magic eyes. Asko— ever the gambler— makes an all or nothing counter: If by the end of the season he cures the blight of the forest, the witch will allow him and any he blesses safe passage through her woods, if he fails she takes not only his eyes but his life. The witch agrees. Now with the clock ticking, Asko embarks with Quade to unravel the mysteries of the blight, fight off the horrendous beasts that lurk in the shadows, and unexpectantly— fall in love.
