"He'd parked his pickup next to the tank, but it was gone. Ronnie scratched his head and looked around, not so much for the truck as for the wise-guys who boosted it. He was running through the list of usual suspects when a glint caught his eye, and he turned instinctively, the hyperactive kid become hyperactive adult attracted by a shiny object. It was the bumper of his pickup, sticking straight up but sinking slowly into the waste-water reservoir just down the hill from the shack. He looked on in amazement, much as a spectator watching the Titanic go down, must have felt. Floating out the windows were debris from the cab and dashbord. There was his thermos bottle, a pack of cigarettes, and the hard had he never used but that his wife made hime buy. A small cloud of steam arose from the back of the truck as the engine swallowed water and stalled, he heard a backfire, and then silence as the truck slipped out of sight.
