Excerpt:
I remembered the early summer sun gliding into its sunset as the tour came to an end. The tour guide, her face a blur now, was giving her final rousing speech, but the words were lost. Because Eli was talking about grass heights. “And those fancy mowers that take gas, you know? I bet they cut even lower,” he said, eyes level to the quads' immaculately cut greens. I squatted down to his level, and stared at all the campus housing. Those huge, intimidating buildings surrounding us. My heart began to beat loud and relentless in my chest. A familiar itch took over me as white blurred over my vision. The buildings turned gray. Panic set in. And for a reason I’ll never know, words stumbled out of my lips. “I don’t know if I’ll survive college. I feel like it’ll be so big I’ll just.. disappear.” And Eli had turned to me, his brows wide and a big grin on his face. “What?! That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard! Room with me. I’ll make so much noise, you won’t be able to disappear if you tried!” And the buildings came back to brown as my heart began to slow. Now, I stared at that boy. One thought pulsing through me, begging to be spoken. *Do you remember me?* *Do you think I’ve forgotten you?*
