the loud silence of painted faces

Blurb:

They were taught to smile, no matter what. In a world painted with bright colors and perfect expressions, no one asks what lies beneath the surface. Faces are carefully crafted—happy, unbothered, whole. And the louder the laughter, the easier it is to ignore what isn’t said. But behind every painted face is a silence that grows. Unspoken thoughts. Hidden pain. Emotions buried so deeply they begin to disappear. Until one begins to question the performance—wondering what it means to feel something real in a world that only rewards pretending. As the masks begin to crack, the truth becomes impossible to ignore: the silence was never empty. It was screaming. And in the end, the most terrifying thing isn’t being seen… —it’s realizing no one ever truly was.

Excerpt:

The smile didn’t feel like mine anymore. It sat on my face the way paint sits on a wall—bright, deliberate… and completely lifeless. I stood in front of the mirror longer than I should have, fingers hovering just inches from my reflection. If I pressed hard enough, I wondered, would it crack? Would something underneath finally show through? But the surface stayed the same. Smooth. Perfect. Quiet. “Smile,” a voice echoed somewhere behind me. Or maybe inside me. I couldn’t tell anymore. So I did. Wider this time. Sharper. Practiced. The kind of smile that makes people comfortable. The kind that keeps them from asking questions. Because questions are dangerous. Questions lead to pauses. And pauses… let the silence in. I stepped away from the mirror, but the feeling followed me—like something unfinished, something waiting. The world outside was loud as always, filled with laughter that didn’t quite reach anyone’s eyes. Colors too bright. Voices too light. Everything looked alive. But nothing felt real. And underneath it all, beneath every word and every forced expression, there it was again— That silence. Loud. Unrelenting. Screaming in a way no one else seemed to hear.
