I'm interested in talking 17th century witchcraft with anyone who is also focusing on this subject. My plan is to split my novel over present day and 17th century England, and I'm still busy researching and trying to get my head into a different century - especially when it comes to somewhat accurate vocab! 😅
So, it's not 17th century England, but when I was writing about witches in 1850s Australia I found reading old newspapers really helpful. I use https://trove.nla.gov.au/ , which is an archive of old australian newspapers, but I'm sure there's an english equivalent. I had a great time researching minor historical events that I could incorporated into the story —like the first ballooon trip from a melbourne park. Even reading unrelated articles gave me the 'vibe' of what the era was like, and for sure some semi-accurate vocab! " THE BALLOON ASCENT. "To the Editor of the Herald." "Sir,-At Mr. Coppin's request, permit me to lay before your readers some account of my ascent from Cremorne Gar- dens this evening, with Mr. Coppin's bal- loon, the 'Australasian.' At forty-eight minutes past six by my watch, I left the ground with a good ascending power, and was much pleased with the picturesque scene below me. I first ascended in a north west direction, which was continued until I arrived over the Eastern Hill, at which time I attained my greatest alti- tude, more than two miles. Here I was seized with a most violent pain in my right ear, which induced me to open the valve in order to descend. The heat of the sun rarified the gas so greatly that I was compelled in order to pause my des- cent, to open the valve no less than twenty eight times. 1858 'MELBOURNE.', Portland Guardian and Normanby General Advertiser (Vic. : 1842 - 1843; 1854 - 1876), 22 February, p. 2. Thanks Bethany, that's so helpful. At the moment I'm using various old books for my research, but newspapers are a good idea, so I'll see what I can find!
