I chanced upon the NoNo but I have no idea about how to take part, what I am supposed to do and so on. Can anyone help me, please?
Hi! Welcome. The challenge is pretty simple, but not easy: you have 30 days to write a 50,000 word novel, starting from November 1st. It's just for yourself, there's nowhere to share it afterwards or anything. The idea is to get a super rough draft down on paper, build the habit of writing everyday, and get over any inhibitions that might be holding you back from writing. Because it's just a personal goal, the 'rules' are pretty flexible —if you want to aim for a Novellette for the first attemt (i.e. 10,000 words) then that's totally fine, and if you're crazy fast and somehow able to write a 200,000 word epic fantasy in a month then that's your choice! Anyway, if you click 'update progress' in the top right corner (or it might say 'my profile' by the time you see this, I'm planning to tweak the wording) , then you can click 'join novel november' which will create a goal with the default values, or you can click 'create a custom goal' if you'd prefer to set your own target word count. You can update your daily progress in the word tracker if you like, which will give you a pretty graph, but again it's a personal challenge so you can track or not track however you like.
Welcome Rathin! On a more technical side of how to do this thing, choose a writing program you like, get a document going, and make sure it has a word counter. I like Google Drive's Docs because I can access it on my phone, computer, tablet, etc. so I don't have to have my laptop to get my wordcount each day. I've used Microsoft Word before too and that works well because the word count is always visible. On Docs you have to use the menus to see the word count. Set aside some time to write about 1,667 words each day, or you can marathon it on the weekends and catch up to your goal then. You then post that word count as described by Bethany above. Seat of your pants writing is usually when you don't go in with a plot or a plan and just write whatever comes to mind towards some kernel of a story you've thought of or just start writing about yourself, your thoughts, etc. and see where it takes you. Otherwise, if you want to plot your way through a story you want to tell, you do that while you're writing and take notes on it to keep it straight usually also on a separate word processing document. Your 50,000 word count comes typically from words you write on your actual story, but I've seen some interpretations as anything towards the story, so any plotting, world building notes, etc. could also count if you wanted them to. It depends on your personal goal. I tend to only count words on my story just because that's my personal goal. You could even define it as just 50k words across all stories you've got going already. Mark their word count, find out how much you write each day, add that to your totals. You could do 50k words of poetry, doesn't matter! Writing matters.
I personally use Microsoft Word, because with a keyboard I'm fairly fast with little typos, while on the mobile I'm like a Neanderthal trying to get written words down on any device that needs power ... I always am fascinated when watching my daughter writing on her mobile, she's just as quick as I am with my keyboard on the PC ... :D ... however, the goal is, just to write a 50.000 word story, never mind if it is a novel, a series of short stories, some songs or poetry, or your personal diary - even though I would be fairly careful with posting something like that ... I personally have my goals set for 100.000, as I always am doing a double NaNo - or a double NoNo, now ... I'm not sure if you can do a half NoNo, but I guess you can, seeing that you can lower the number in that little thingy in your goal-window just as you can rise it ... but generally, it's just about writing, bringing your imagination to paper, using your imagination and play with your dreams ... wish you good luck evil
