Period of transition History is the study of changing patterns in society, and to understand these changes historians divide the past into three broad periods: ancient, medieval, and modern. These divisions help us see how society, economy, culture, and politics in one period differed from the preceding and succeeding ones. The shift from medieval to modern did not happen overnight; it was a gradual process that took place over time and did not begin at the same time everywhere in the world. In India, the eighteenth century is generally taken as the starting point of the modern period, as this was when the British became the main rulers and brought about changes in many fields of life. The modern age is marked by features like industrialization, urbanization, scientific progress, growth of democratic institutions, rationalism, and humanism. For studying the modern period in India, there is an abundance of source materials available in different forms. [ The modern period in Europe was shaped by the *Renaissance*, a cultural movement that means ‘rebirth’ and spanned roughly from the 14th to the 17th century. It began in Italy and spread across Europe, aiming to revive the learning and culture of ancient Greece and Rome. During this time, art, architecture, literature, philosophy, and science flourished. Renaissance thinkers promoted *rationalism*, urging people not to blindly accept what the Church said but to question beliefs and judge things through reason instead of blind faith and superstition. This shift in thinking influenced the modern age, which is also marked by industrialization, urbanization, scientific progress, and the growth of democratic institutions. For studying this period, historians rely heavily on *primary sources* like newspapers, speeches, letters, photographs, and other records, as these give direct evidence of the time.
